The driver works out of the box with the 10th Gen NUC and all previous generations, except the 8th Gen. Within the 7.0 releases, there are many issues with consumer network adapters, like the deprecation of VMKlinux drivers and thus the missing support for Realtek NICs, and the up and downs with the ne1000 driver. Please always keep in mind that this is not an officially supported platform. If you have Intel NUCs you should always be very careful when updating to new ESXi releases as there might be issues. Something is fishy on the ESXi 7.0 side, probably.ДЄnyway, I embedded the KS file inside the ISO image, changed the boot parameters to ' ks=cdrom:/KS.CFG' and it worked, image for v7 was built and works good for provisioning (right now have a 10 nodes cluster privisioned by maas on v7). I re-built packer with that driver added and it worked, so we should probably open a bug there for this.ДЄnyway, the installation worked ok for ESXi 6.5 and 6.7, but is also giving me trouble on 7.0 (I can see with tcpdump that the GET request for the kickstart file gets truncated and the webserver replies with error. Packer does check the network card type against an internal list when parsing the json and gives an error of unsupported card type because 'e1000e' is not on that list. Problem is that packer itself does not support it (!!!). I discovered that there is a 'e1000e' card (Intel i82547L) supported by qemu that is supported by ESXi 7.0.0 and also earlier versions, so this one is a huge candidate to be the default for the maas packer templates. I'm wondering if there is any other thing I can do to make it work. It does not complain about missing network cards anymore and goes on with the installation, but it just freezes when trying to fetch the kickstart image over http, which makes me think the network is not really working. Not sure if this is officially supported in production but it works nice, I have used it in the lab even on prior versions.ДЄnyway, I tried changing the network type for 'vmxnet3' and it's not working. This is for scenarios where it is running nested. Qemu supports, to my surprise, the vmxnet3 virtual network card (could not find documentation for this but if you do a 'qemu -device help' you can see it listed there.Д®SXi is happy with seeing a vmxnet3 card on the 'hardware'. If you try to generate an image of the v7 the installation aborts very early in the process complaining that there is no supported network card plugged in the system. In fact, I tested every single one of all the cards supported by qemu and none of them is supported in ESXi 7 anymore (except for vmxnet3 - see below). The e1000 driver support is dropped in esxi 7. I'm trying to generate esxi 7 images and it fails because of no supported network card is found.
